What to know

What is alarplasty?+

Alarplasty reshapes the base of the nose, the wings of the nostrils, to reduce width or flare. It is for people whose nostrils look wide compared with the rest of the nose.

What happens during the procedure?+

Small amounts of tissue are removed from the base of the nostrils, with the incisions placed in the natural creases where they are least visible. Fine stitches close the skin.

Recovery: what to expect+

Expect mild swelling, tenderness and some crusting around the stitches. Your surgeon tells you how to clean the area and when the stitches come out, often within about a week. Avoid pressure or bumps to the nose while it heals.

Risks and things to know+

Risks include visible scarring, uneven nostrils, changes in nostril shape that you do not want, infection and the need for a revision. Results differ from person to person, and any procedure can need a touch-up or revision.

Questions to bring to your consultation+

Is alarplasty enough, or would rhinoplasty give a better balance? Where will the scars be? How long until the stitches come out?

This page is general information, not medical advice. Your surgeon will talk about your own situation during your consultation.
