What to know
What is breast augmentation?+
Breast augmentation increases breast size and improves shape using implants, or by moving fat from another part of your body. It can also restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss.
Planning your size and shape+
You and your surgeon talk about the look you want, then consider your body frame, skin and existing breast tissue to choose an implant size, shape and position that fits you. Measurements and photos usually help.
What happens during surgery?+
An incision is made in a place agreed with you, such as under the breast. A pocket is created and the implant is placed, then the incision is closed. If you are having fat transfer instead, fat is taken by liposuction and injected into the breasts.
Recovery: what to expect+
Expect soreness, swelling and a feeling of tightness at first. You will usually wear a supportive bra, and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for several weeks. Your breasts take time to settle into their final shape. We give you do's and don'ts before surgery and see you at follow-up visits.
Risks and things to know+
Risks include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, hardening of the tissue around an implant (capsular contracture), and an implant moving or leaking. Implants are not lifetime devices and may need checking or replacing. Results differ from person to person, and any procedure can need a touch-up or revision.
If you already have implants or past injections and are having problems, see our guide on revision breast augmentation.
Questions to bring to your consultation+
Which implant size and type suit me, and why? Where will the scar be? How long until I can exercise? What follow-up do I need over the years?
This page is general information, not medical advice. Your surgeon will talk about your own situation during your consultation.
