What to know
What are dermal fillers?+
Fillers are injectable gels, most often made from hyaluronic acid, a substance the body naturally contains. They restore volume that fades with age, smooth lines such as those beside the nose and mouth, and shape areas like the lips, cheeks and jawline.
What happens during treatment?+
The area is cleaned and numbed, and your provider injects small amounts of filler at the right depths, checking the shape as they go. Treatment takes under an hour, and most people go back to their day afterwards.
How long do results last?+
Results appear straight away, with some settling over the first days. Depending on the product and the area, they last from several months to more than a year. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed.
Risks and things to know+
Common effects are swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising for a few days, and sometimes lumps that settle. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel, which is an emergency, so it should only be done by a trained clinician in a proper clinic. Tell us about allergies and any past filler or injections.
Questions to bring to your consultation+
Which product and amount do you recommend for me, and why? How long will it last? What do I do if I am not happy with the result?
This page is general information, not medical advice. Your surgeon will talk about your own situation during your consultation.
