Liposuction

Contour stubborn fat pockets that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Liposuction removes localized fat to improve body contours. It is a shaping procedure, not a way to lose weight.

What to know

What is liposuction?+

Liposuction removes fat from areas such as the abdomen, waist, flanks, thighs or arms to refine the shape. It works best when your weight is stable and your skin has reasonable elasticity.

What happens during surgery?+

Through small incisions, a thin tube (cannula) is used to loosen and remove fat. Fluid is often used to make the procedure more comfortable and reduce bleeding. The tiny incisions are closed, and you are put into a compression garment.

Recovery: what to expect+

Expect swelling, bruising, soreness and sometimes numbness in the treated areas. A compression garment is worn for a few weeks. Light walking is encouraged, and strenuous exercise waits until you are cleared. Swelling takes weeks to go down, and the final shape appears over months.

Risks and things to know+

Risks include uneven contours, loose skin, collections of fluid, numbness, infection and, rarely, more serious complications. Fat that is removed does not come back in those cells, but you can still gain fat in other areas if your weight goes up. Results differ from person to person, and any procedure can need a touch-up or revision.

Questions to bring to your consultation+

Which areas can safely be treated at once? Will my skin tighten enough, or would I need another procedure? How long do I wear the garment?

This page is general information, not medical advice. Your surgeon will talk about your own situation during your consultation.
